Invisalign not Tracking? Top Tips on How to Get Back on Track with Invisalign
Jan 31, 2025
Are you struggling to wear your aligners? Maybe you’ve had a string of social activities, or a vacation where all you wanted to do was relax, and you’re finding it hard to get back into the aligner routine. Many of us tell ourselves we’ll make up the hours later or be more diligent with our next tray, but life happens. Now, you might notice a gap or “halo” between your teeth and your aligners—a clear sign your Invisalign isn’t tracking correctly.
Signs Your Invisalign Treatment Is Not Tracking
Gaps at the start of a new aligner tray are normal, as your teeth will gradually shift into place by the end of the aligner cycle. However, if your teeth aren’t tracking properly, you may notice a visible gap between your teeth and the edge of the aligner—sometimes called a "halo"—toward the end of the cycle.

If your Invisalign isn’t tracking, don’t worry—you're not alone. As a Registered Dental Assistant, I’ve helped countless patients regain control of their Invisalign treatment, whether they fell behind during the holidays, a two-week vacation, or a hectic work schedule. These tried-and-true tips will help you get back on track and keep your Invisalign treatment moving forward.
1. Use an aligner seating tool and bite like your teeth depend on it.
Because it does. Aligner seating tools are essential for ensuring your aligners fit snugly over your teeth. Products like the PUL 2-in-1 Seating and Removal Tool, Invisalign chewies, or Invisalign chews are designed to help close gaps and halos by gently forcing your aligners into place. By biting down on these tools, you’re guiding your teeth into the movements programmed into your aligners. Aim for 5-10 minutes of biting time after each time you insert your aligners back in.
Consistency is key—use your seating tool regularly to maintain proper tracking and aligner fit.
2. 15 minute break sneaking into overtime?
These breaktimes can add up! An innocent 15-minute break from your aligners can quickly turn into 30 minutes, and before you know it, those breaks add up to 5–6 hours in a single day. For your Invisalign treatment to be effective, you must wear your aligners for 20–22 hours daily. This gives you just 2–4 hours for meals and drinks. Breaktimes can be tough to keep track of, especially after getting into the habit of keeping your trays out because of the holidays or vacation.
To avoid unintentional extended breaks:
-
Use reminder apps like the TrayMinder App or the Invisalign App to track your daily aligner wear.
-
These apps offer timers and alerts to ensure your 30-minute snack break doesn’t turn into an hour.
3. Stay in your Tray
If you’ve fallen behind on a specific set of aligners, staying in your current tray for a few extra days can help your teeth catch up. This ensures your teeth move fully and fit snugly in the aligners before advancing onto the next tray. Always consult your Invisalign provider before extending wear time. They’ll help you adjust your timeline while keeping your treatment plan on track.
4. Run it Back
If you’ve been progressing through your aligners but notice the gap or halo keeps getting worse, it might be time to backtrack. Moving back a tray or two to find the one that fits best can help reset your progress and get your teeth tracking again. While it might feel frustrating to step back, this approach is often more efficient than waiting weeks for a rescan and new aligners. However, always discuss backtracking with your Invisalign provider—they’ll guide you through the process and ensure it’s the right move for your treatment plan.
Make Your Invisalign Treatment a Priority
Getting back on track with Invisalign after a busy holiday season doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By using aligner seating tools like PUL’s 2 in 1 Tool or Invisalign chewies, staying mindful of your wear time, and consulting with your provider when needed, you can ensure your Invisalign treatment stays on schedule.
Whether you’re recovering from holiday indulgences or just adjusting to a busy lifestyle, remember that every small step counts toward achieving the perfect smile.
Cheers to your smile journey!
